Always striving for progress

O.P. bio hortus

Bio Hortus was born in 2014 from the idea of several partners, each of whom has 30 years of experience in the agricultural sector. The main aim of the company is to be able to close the supply chain, bringing the product directly from the soil to the consumer through large-scale retail trade and agri-food markets.

The company covers more than 1500 hectares, 400 of which are under glass. All agricultural plots are identified by alphanumeric codes that serve to identify the company's production at all stages of the supply chain.

In order to reduce the use of pesticides and obtain cleaner products, a large part of the production is obtained by implementing integrated pest management. Laboratory analyses in fact detect minimal quantities of pesticide residues, since chemical treatments are reduced by an average of 70/80% under integrated pest management.

Bio Hortus operates the cultivation and commercialisation of products through modern facilities located in the industrial area of Palma di Montechiaro (AG), Canicattì (AG), Ribera (AG), Caltagirone (CT), Vittoria (RG), Niscemi (CL) and Ispica (RG), Trapani (TP), all of which are IFS certified, aimed at the processing and packaging of agricultural products, which are carried out with the help of computerised sorters that sort the product by both weight and size, and all are placed in various types of packaging, depending on the destination: Large-scale retail trade and agri-food markets.

Bio Hortus also distributes its own fruit and vegetable products and those of supplier companies abroad - both in EU and non-EU countries. In order to guarantee durability and freshness, the company has cold storage facilities capable of maintaining the organoleptic characteristics of the products intact. Bio Hortus has packaging facilities that comply with EU regulations and international IFS standards to guarantee consumers, who are increasingly attentive to the quality, hygiene and food safety of what they bring to their tables. The Bio Hortus company has GLOBAL GAP, GLOBAL GRASP, IFS, SPRING and BIODIVERSITY certificates, standards that represent a reference model to refer to in order to determine the success of an agricultural production process and the obtaining of a product that meets quality requirements.

The company also has ORGANIC CERTIFICATION and COC (chain of custody) certification. Last but not least, as of this year, we are a PO, in which several production entities have already associated themselves, thus enabling us to guarantee production of quality goods all year round.

For the continuation of our business growth, we are already in the process of expanding our facilities for the storage, processing and preservation of the products we grow and market, for which work has already begun and is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2023. In particular, there will be 700 square metres of state-of-the-art cold storage rooms, with humidity extraction and special evaporators that will make it possible to refrigerate goods for several months, with a capacity to store up to 1,500 pallets at the same time. We also expect to be self-sufficient much of the time, thanks to state-of-the-art photovoltaic systems with a high yield and energy production.

In order to ensure and increase corporate welfare, we are active with a series of measures to increase the physical, mental and perceived well-being of our employees and employees.

We have already built and made available to them a gymnasium equipped with various professional equipment, an advantageous credit line thanks to agreements with the institutes we work with, and a kindergarten for employees' children will soon be created.
